Okinawa Goju-Ryu Karate

Okinawa Goju-Ryu Karate is one of the four original Okinawan styles of Karate. Goju-Ryu Karate shares its roots with other styles of Karate developed over time from the fighting arts of China. These arts came to Okinawa, where they blended with the indigenous martial arts of the Island at the time. Grandmaster Chojun Miyagi (born on April 25,1888) was the founder of Goju-Ryu Karate, he dedicated all his life to spread Karate throughout Okinawa and mainland Japan. The style of Goju-ryu developed as a response to the need for a no-nonsense, effective personal self defense system. Today the style is spread all over the world.

Goju-Ryu karate employs hard and soft techniques with circular and linear movements, has a great variety of hand and foot techniques. The emphasis is placed on strengthening the body and mind with many supplementary exercises. The basic idea of hard and soft style is to use a soft blocking technique to block a hard strike or to deflect the strike rather than meet force with force. Likewise, when attacking, Goju-Ryu employs a hard technique against a soft target and vice versa. The actual style is characterized by efficient, precise and devastating attacks to vulnerable points usually ending by taking down or controlling the attacker after subduing his will to fight.

Our Sensei Les Heri, of Redondo Beach, California achieved the rank of Go-dan (5th degree black belt) and in addition he has been awarded the title of Shihan (teacher of teachers). Sensei Les Heri teaches over 300 students a week in 5 cities in the Los Angeles area and has over 40 years of martial arts training under his belt. He began his training in 1972 in TaeKwonDo with Master Richard Chun in New York. He furthered his training with Shihan Victor Vega in the style of Japanese Goju-Ryu Karate-do. Shihan Vega, a veteran of the Vietnam war also taught Heri Sensei Aiki-Jitsu, close quarters combat, gun and edged weapon disarms and the art of Iaido. After the passing of Vega Sensei, Heri Sensei continued training with Michael Robinson in the art of Okinawa Goju-Ryu Karate-do.
