Women’s Jiu Jitsu Self-Defense Program

About the Program

The Women’s Jiu Jitsu Self-Defense Program was founded and is directed by Grandmaster Christianny Paiva Lima. Grandmaster Christianny is a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a 7th Degree Taekwondo Master, bringing nearly 40 years of martial arts experience. As a pioneer, she is the first woman to be identified as holding a Black Belt in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Taekwondo, two distinct martial arts disciplines.

Who Is This Program For?

This program is designed for all women who want to learn practical and effective self-defense in a safe, enjoyable, and supportive environment. It is especially suitable for working professionals, mothers, pre-teens, teens, and young women preparing to leave home for the first time, such as those heading off to college. If you have ever wanted to build the skills and confidence to protect yourself but feel uncomfortable in a typical, male-dominated group class, this program is for you.

Program Focus

The Women’s Jiu Jitsu Self-Defense Program is created for women who want to gain the skills and confidence needed to defend themselves effectively.

What Will I Learn?

The Women’s Program is tailored to meet the needs of women interested in Jiu Jitsu for self-defense. You will learn a range of skills and techniques relevant to common self-defense situations, including:

  • How to escape from being pinned on the ground
  • What actions to take if you are grabbed from behind
  • Defending yourself against strikes, both while standing and on the ground
  • Techniques to take down, pin, and control a much larger or stronger opponent
  • How to perform key submissions, such as armlocks, triangle strangles, rear naked strangles, and guillotines
  • Fundamental striking techniques for self-defense

What to Expect in My First Trial Class?

In your first class, you will be paired with a student who has been practicing for some time. You will start by learning the basic body positions for groundwork. You may observe other students practicing advanced movements, which might make you wonder if you’ll ever be able to master this unique grappling martial art. It’s normal to have questions and doubts during your first class, such as wondering how long it took others to learn these techniques or feeling unsure about your place on the mats. These feelings are common, but as the class progresses, you will begin to feel more at ease. The group is very supportive, and everyone helps each other succeed.

What to Wear for My First Trial Class?

Clothes : Wear a T-shirt, sports top, or rash guard. Leggings are recommended for bottoms. Ensure your clothing does not have any zippers or metal parts. A Gi (Jiu Jitsu uniform) will be provided for you to borrow during your trial class.

Hair : It is highly recommended to tie your hair up, as grappling can cause loose hair to get in the way. Avoid using metal hair accessories or bobby pins.

Jewelry : Please remove all jewelry for your safety and the safety of others.

Hygiene : Before class, make sure your hands and feet are clean and check your body odor. Wearing deodorant is appreciated by everyone. Your clothes should be clean and free of tears.

Nails : Keep both your fingernails and toenails short and clean.

What to expect in my first trial class?

In your first class you will be with a fellow student that is being practice for a while. You will learn the basic body positions to work in the ground. You will see other students practicing some cool movements and possible will make you think you never get this strange grappling martial art called Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. You perhaps starting ask yourself, “What I am doing in this place with all these women in the mats?” “Should I just go home?” “How long took these girls to learn all these complicate movements, even choke each other and being cool about it?” Very true!!! We all get some thoughts in the first class. However, you will start to feel more comfortable with it, after few minutes. We are very supportive with each other.
In the first class you will learn some basics about the body position and posture for grappling. How to take someone seating on top of you by sweeping them and landing in your closed guard and submit the other person with a collar neck choke. You will also learn how to defend yourself from the same choke.
By the end of the class, you will look at yourself and think: “One hour ago I had no idea how to do any grappling, and now I feel so amazing about it. In one class I truly was able to already do few moves. I actually choked another person!”
